The La Rita Theatre is home to local productions, live entertainment and more throughout the year. The most popular being the old fashioned Melodrama held during the XIT Celebration. Reunion in 1940, “in memory of the departed riders of our plains,” and celebrates the cowhands of the famed XIT Ranch. Local artist Bobby Dycke designed the monument. The Sesquicentennial Monument outside the Dallam County Courthouse was established in 1986 to celebrate both Texas’ sesquicentennial and the 50th anniversary of the XIT Rodeo and Reunion. The James R. Fox Memorial, erected in 2003 outside the Dallam County Courthouse, is a gift from the Peoples Republic of China. The monument is in remembrance of James R. Fox, who flew rescue missions during World War II for the Hump Pilots Association. Veterans Memorial Park is home to the Dallam/Hartley Counties Veterans Memorial. The memorial honors all branches of the military and contains the names of area veterans. The memorial is lighted at night and is a perpetual care memorial, so names will continually be aded as men and women from the area serve our country in peace or war. HARTLEY The Image of Divine Mercy, (888) 724-4651, is located at 1010 12th Street in Hartley. The blessings of Jesus pour out from this 16-foot shrine to all people regardless of faith, creed or color. Hartley is home to the World Champion C-C Chuckwagon. Sue and Ken Cunningham, along with Jean Cates, share their award-winning recipes in their Chuckwagon cookbooks. (806) 365-4596 TEXLINE The Rita Blanca & Kiowa National Grasslands, (575) 374-9652, are managed by the U.S. Forest Service and encompass 77,463 acres in Texas along with adjacent acreage in Oklahoma and New Mexico. Visitors have opportunities to hike, bird-watch, hunt, ride horses, utilize ATVs in designated areas, and generally enjoy the great outdoors. Picnic facilities are located at Thompson Grove near Texline. The Texline Center, (806) 362-4261, is a state-of-the-art multipurpose meeting facility with audio and visual equipment capabilities, a commercial kitchen, fitness room, laundry room and playground. It also serves as a medical satellite for Coon Memorial Hospital in Dalhart. While in Texline, stroll along the sidewalks featuring ranching brands of area residents. CHANNING Channing celebrates the 4th of July with an old-fashioned main street gathering to watch the Fireworks Show. August brings gatherings for young and old with the Fiddler’s Contest, (806) 235-3795; the Volunteer Fire Department, (806) 333-3027, fundraiser meal; and the Channing Ranch Rodeo, (806) 343-5337, features teams from area ranches competing in roping, branding, doctoring and other events modeled after the cowboys’ everyday working experiences. For history buffs, the XIT Office and Hartley County Courthouse in Channing are a must-see for a taste of the old west. Both are registered as Texas Historical Landmarks and have informative memorial markers about the XIT Ranch, Hartley County, and the Matador Ranch and Reunion. 18
